DAVID RUFFIN REDEEMED!
Readers of my earlier book (“A Memoir David Ruffin―My Temptation”) may have been left with mixed feelings about it. Perhaps they felt that there was “something” wrong or missing. Maybe there was nothing redemptive about it or it had no “purpose”. Maybe it seemed unfinished or was just “off”. It was hard to put your finger on.
After publication, I eventually came to realize these things, but never quite knew what the exact problem was. I just knew that it was out-of-balance.
In 1999, a book that was written by David's oldest brother was published. I didn't read it until maybe seven years later, but when I did, I was instantly free.
The book told in some detail what it was like to be a child in the Ruffin house. Time and place notwithstanding, the fact is that the father was extremely cruel to them. At that point, I was able to see David as a victim himself. Reading the details of those horrific experiences freed me of the anger, resentment and bitterness I had harbored for many years over how David had treated me and even our son. In the place of those feelings came a feeling of understanding; yes, even the gift of compassion.
I understood that abuse was all he was ever taught; I was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I forgave him. After all, how is a boy to learn what it is to be a man if he isn't taught by his father's Godly example?
Thus, I was led to rewrite my memoir by allowing people to know about David's childhood and by giving my “testimony” of coming to Jesus in 2004. I was also given a brand new title and a brand new cover, as well as other corrections. Now it all makes perfect sense!

This is a book that EVERYONE, whether you are the abused, the abuser, a friend/family member, or just a human being, should read over and over. It took me 5 full days to finish this book, because I had to go back again and again to wrap my mind around so much of the content. I would ask myself "he did WHAT", "she did WHAT", "they did WHAT"??? You will find yourself waiting to exhale as Ms. Ruffin lays bare a life that began in the depths of darkness, and continued into a total abyss of emotional and physical abuse, only to be rescued and brought into the light by her new found faith, and accepting Our Lord with His mercy, grace, and salvation. You will understand how David Ruffin became the man he was, and how he truly did desire to change that man, but had no idea how to accomplish that. I was a police officer in the city of Detroit for 20 years. During that time I responded to hundreds of "domestic/family trouble" runs. Seeing the brutality of a woman who was beaten to a pulp, and the terror of any children in that situation, it gave me the greatest of pleasure to arrest the abuser. However, it would make me absolutely ballistic when the very next day, the woman would drop the charges and refuse to prosecute because "she loved him and just knew he would change". How could she do and believe such a thing? After all these years, I finally understand the other side of the coin, because Ms. Ruffin documented so succinctly and honestly the history and everyday life of 2 people caught in a horrific past they had no control over, and a future of deep love that bound them together but could not "fix" the problems or rid them of the demons that made them who they were. I highly recommend this book to any and all who wish to understand why people are the way they are, and to know there is always another side to the coin. Many thanks to you, Ms. Ruffin, for helping me to better understand, on so many levels, my fellow man and woman, and that love has many meanings.Product details

As a long time Temptation fan I found it hard to digest this books content initially. However, processing the written word as in its descriptive form made me a believer that no one knows what happens in a home once the front door has closed. Ms. Ruffin breaks down the day to day struggles that many endure on a daily basis, not only in their home, but with family, friends and society in general.
In her writings I found myself feeling her physical pain , emotional with drawl and feelings of out right despair. As a considered friend of Ms. Ruffin I have reached out to her on several occasions to help me with creating safety plan for victims of domestic violence. I have found her to be as honest and true as her writings in this book.
As a Domestic Violence Victim Advocate, I find Ms. Ruffin's story to be a good tool for survivors as well as those providing support. I thank Ms. Ruffin for her time and willingness to share her story.

The book was interesting enough - no question about that. I felt she would have benefited from an editor because there were many technical errors in her writing but such is not a hugely big deal. There was also some skipping around in time periods which often made her narrative a bit hard to follow. She way have been wanting to go back and forth between time frames intentionally but if so, better transitions were in order.
I have issues with the value judgements about numerous persons referenced in the book and believe much of it would have been best left out. It serves to make her look rather petty when, in fact, she is likely a very spiritually-oriented person. My real problem with this otherwise interesting book is that not enough time was spent discussing the disease components of domestic violence such that the reader can understand WHY she stayed so long, despite such egregious abuse. Even as a professional who well knows the addictive nature of domestic violence victims, I found myself ever saying "I can't believe she stayed after that!" I was ever shaking my head how anyone could be so violently abusive and, then, how anyone else could tolerate it for repeat occurrences. In fact, it floored me. I found myself actually getting more annoyed at her than at him for subjecting herself to this abuse. More emphasis,, then, should be placed on the disease of co-dependency and what the victim is thinking at any given time. Doing so would go a long way toward the reader having a more understanding view of her plight. Absent that, I felt far more badly for the dogs, the horses and the son who truly could not get away than I did for the author who actually could do so.
In the end, Ms Sapia-Ruffin wrote a very interesting book. I found myself reading it when I should have been doing my other work online, instead. How much of that interest comes from a desire to better understand domestic violence or co-dependency and how much of it comes from just an interest in prying into and looking at other persons affairs? I am not so sure. I would like to think it the former but I fear it is more the latter.
The bottom line is that it is an interesting book and I would recommend it BUT I have mixed feelings about some of the petty remarks and also some of the revelations. I have very strong feelings about whether it is really ever justified to air out one's dirty linen in public so as to reveal negative information about persons who are no longer here to defend themselves. Truly, I have a big issue with that aspect of the book which is why I say that more emphasis needs to be placed on the pathology of domestic violence in order to justify maligning persons who are, in fact, no longer here to defend themselves. Is such ever appropriate? For these reasons, for me, at least. this book is a very mixed bag of positive and negative attributes.
Will not disappoint! If you love Motown, and always wondered what some of the real life was behind it all. That's what you get. Genna is a gifted writer, honest, with a gritty sense of humor, (that I loved) that comes from her unique personality. Genna gives us this and more with her incredible writing. This book is hard to put down, it flows as it tells of Love, Sadness, downright Hurt, and determination. As with a lot of genuine talents, they have a darker side, deep down they have a greater void to fill, and they do it with adulation, and destruction, Genna tells us of some of Mr. David Ruffin's (Lead singer in the group "The Temptations") challenges, as well as some of their most loving times. I did not want the memoir to end! Genna gives us a glimps into her and David's Love and Life together.
